like at first i thought it was gonna be about him escaping the place he was locked in but when i saw it i didnt know if it was before or after he got caught

The previous answer is correct in that 'Red Dragon' was a prequel and the first in the Lecter series (that is, before 'Young Hannibal' came out a couple of weeks ago). However, the last film in the series is NOT 'Silence of the Lambs' but 'Hannibal'. It was not a very good film, but it was still a continuation of the story of 'The Silence of the Lambs'.

I am guessing that you are talking about "Red Dragon". It is the first the the Lector series. The end of the movie ties in with "The Silence of the Lambs".
Just a note, "Red Dragon" was made back in the 80's. It was called "Manhunter".

the red dragon is the prequel to silence of the lambs. it was after he got caught but not by starling. the new movie hannibal rising with gaspar uliel is the prequel of red dragon. it's supposed to show how hannibal became a criminal.
