The Colt Fire arms com was started in 1848 by Samuel Colt who wanted to make a multi shot firearm for the US Army. The first was the Patterson Colt and the Walker Colt that was sold to Walkers' Texas Rangers in 1849. After the Mexican War the US Army began to buy Colt pistols for the Army and the Navy and it was the only revolver manufactured until 1862 when Remington began to produce fire arms for the Union during the Civil War.

The Pistol was a six shot "Cap and Ball" Revolver in that the firer had to load each cylinder from the front with a measure of powder and a bullet and a firing cap was place on the end of the cylinder to fire it. Colt also made a revolving Rifle and continues to produce firearms to this day most notably the M1911 Colt .45 Auto, The Colt Python and the M-16 Family of rifles used by the Military and police forces today.
