I'm Black, Male, and married w/Children. I say no. Restitutuion should have been paid to those people who actually endured slavery. I don't want to be paid for something that I haven't done or gone through. You people who are White today aren't responsible for slavery. All I ask of you and all people is this: Put down the burden of Racism in this country. It has become too heavy a load, and no amount of people can carry it. Let's instead recognize and respect each other's differences and move on in peace and unity. We're all Americans and there are people out there who hate ALL Americans regardless of race, creed, color, or national origin. Let's instead concentrate our minds and prayers and energies on finding cures for any manor of ailments plaguing ou borders.
It's been said time and again. United we stand! Divided we fall!

I think the further recognition of gross injustice is always a good idea. Money would today be problematic. There are so many descendants even large awards would be divided down.
I would like to see public transportation be free on Martin Luther King's birthday. We need to promote the ideas and writings of this man. The US government should buy the copyrights to his written works and speeches and put them out under the creative commons with some rights reserved to insure accuracy.

Even if we wanted to, we couldn't. Tracing slave ancestry would be next to impossible, since slaves weren't treated as people, and usually were just numbers on a page. Besides, it would bankrupt not only America, but England, Holland, Spain, and any other country that participated in the slave trade. While we hate slavery and all that it meant, the children shouldn't be held responsible for the sins of the fathers.

Great ideas.
The descendants of slaves don't ask for compensation, but the government, as the continuous representative of the nation, must make serious consideration and take all the responsibilities concerning past, future and present happenings. This civilized action will become a good example for the rulers in the other parts of the world in restoring justice which is the mother of peace.
If governments ignore justice, who else will shoulder this endeavour for the advancement of the human race?

I agree with you that the united states should not have to compensate descendants of slaves... But what about the descendants of the people who owned the slaves and my fortunes through their manual labour... Maybe they should pay some of this money to the ancestors of the people who helped make there ancestors rich... Just a thought..

I totally agree with you...... These descendants today have never been slaves and it wasn't us that enslaved those people way back when. I don't understand why people would believe we should. How could we compensate for something they aren't suffering from and we didn't even do in the first place!!!!

If they haven't improved their position in society in well over 100 years, what will a few thousand dollars do for them? Why not just dedicate a large amount of money to improving education in the inner cities?

The slaves that ended up on the shores of America were the product of in- fighting among there own clans in Africa. The African chiefs sold these men to the white man for money(or goods). If anyone needs to be repaid, it is any man, woman that is in the service of the American people. Including African American people!

Only if I can get compensation for when the BLACK Moors took over Spain for 400 years.
If you look in the past, you'll find that the BLACK race essentially invented slavery. And they're one of the few continents where slavery is still actively practiced on a larger scale.
