if a kid can punt about 35-40 yards a kick, he is doing good on high school level! also, if a punter can coffin corner his kicks, like RAY GUY OF OAKLAND USED TO, he will get scholarships to a lot of major colleges! punting is a skill that every good college, or pro teams need! a good punter can make a huge difference in some big games at times!

Because if the ball is punted into the end zone and is either downed there by a player, or the punted ball travels through the end zone, it is called a touch back and the receiving team automatically takes possession of the ball on their own 20 yard line. The ideal situation is to punt the ball high so that the kicking teams coverage can run to the receiver before he has a chance to catch the punt and return it for positive yardage. Best yet it is hoped that the kicking teams players will get to the ball first and keep it from reaching the end zone... hopefully downing the ball inside of the 20 yard line and thereby pining the opposing offense against the end zone... Something like that anyway... The longer it takes that ball to reach the returner, the less time he has to deal with the would-be tacklers.

i would say for HS varsity....anything around 30-35 yards is good. The more hang time the better, or learn to angle ur kicks really well and kick away from the return man. If u mean college varsity then i would say around 40-45

Distant wise I would say 35 and you are good, but the thing is, even if you punt far, it does not do you any good if you are allways giving them a touchback and get the other team to start at the 20 yard line, work on the acuracy and get it inside the 10 yard line when you need to.

remember your about 12-15 yds behind the line of scrimmage,so after the line 35-40 should do,but hang time might make up for lack of distance.the farther you kick it on a line drive the faster it gets to the reciever.so he can return it farther.

You have to kick for both distance and hang time. At least 50 yards down field and four second hang time.
