Why Alcatraz was closed?

I'm refering to the prison in Califonian Island.

Too costly to maintain, the upkeep and costs for refurbishment were too much. The salty weather badly eroded the bars and concrete, which helped the last inmates to escape.

They should redo everything on the island and reopen the prison!!!
