in my mind it depends a lot on to what degree those convictions have been tested during the lifetime. We use metaphors like hardened by fire, etc., and for the people who have had those types of trials tend to be more solid when stuff falls apart. While tigers may not necessarily 'change their stripes', I believe it can happen that a tiger can forget they are a tiger temporarily. If they survive, they will eventually come back to the fact that they are indeed, a tiger. Then again, were they really a tiger in the first place or just acting like one. It matters.
