well where do i start? I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 2WD v6 3.0L. This problem started around the 1st of jan. When I get up in the morning at 6a.m. and i try to start my car it cranks and cranks but wont turn over.So I started giving it a little gas with the gas peddel and it starts up pretty ruff alot of shaking for about 5-8 seconds then it idol's fine and runs smooth as the day i bought it. Now for the rest of the day it starts fine, turn the key cranks 2-3 times and away I go. So what could this be? I took it to auto zone and the only code it was reading was a P1400 (EGR circuit low input) which im pretty sure has nothing to do with this crazy morning start problem i'm having. Keep in mind that this truck runs perfect as the day I bought it after I get it started first thing in the morning. Please help !

And just how cold is it at 6 a.m. in the morning where you are?
Below freezing? Below zero?

You're truck is not starting first thing in the morning because everything is "FROZEN". This is why people go to extreme measures of trying to keep their engine protected from the cold overnight.

Your vehicle starts up the rest of the day "fine" because it's already warmed up.

Try putting a heavy blanket or something over the engine, or anything you can do to shield the engine from the freezing overnight temperatures, when you park it at night and then...REMEMBER to remove it the next morning before trying to start it again...this might help...unless you have a garage you can park it in.

The conditions you are describing exactly mimic the problems you would have if the EGR valve is stuck OPEN. So yes, the problem you are experiencing in the moring is highly likely to be caused by your EGR valve.

If the diaphram of the EGR valve is still good, simply remove the EGR valve and clean out the carbon deposits that are preventing the EGR diaphram from moving freely. This should solve your problem.

Your vehicle is 7 years old. Let's ask some simple questions that might help you out.

When was your last tune-up?
When was the last time you changed your fuel filter?
Air filter?
PCV valve?
Spark plug wires?
Cleaned your fuel injectors? In-tank cleaner or otherwise?
Cleaned your throttle body?

Each of the things I've mentioned can account for hard starting, individually or in combination with other things.

I personally would start with having the fuel filter changed and also determining the condition of you in tank fuel pump.

I'm guessing your truck is pushing about 130K miles. It's past time for those type things to be done. Consider a cooling system flush as well. Your hard starting is only going to get worse if you aren't doing your general maintenance.

Sounds like you could have water condensation in the gas. Try adding a bottle of drygas to a tank of gas and see if it helps.
