I use my soap dishes, mostly for decoration. I often keep little objects such as hair clips, lip gloss, spare change, etc. But I never put bar soap in them because no matter what you do it gets gross. I use liquid soap in matching dispensers insetad.

The soap usually does not melt, unless you have a really hot house! What usually happens is someone uses the soap in the dish to wash their hands and when they put the soap back, they drip water into the dish, and that water softens the soap, which leads to it caking all over the pretty soapdish.
If your soap dish has raised areas where the soap can be placed, then you will find that these have less of a tendency to get as dirty and caked as the others.
If you don't want the soap dishes to get dirty because they are so pretty, I suggest placing bars of soap that are still wrapped in pretty paper in them, and then forbid the family from using them. As someone else said, get a pretty container of soft soap in a bottle for them to use instead.

What you need to do is find a way of keeping the soap from touching the bottom so that it can dry out properly and not get gummy. Try putting a couple of plastic pop bottle tops on the bottom of your dish so that the soap can rest on that and not dry out.
We soapmakers recommend wire soap dishes for just that reason, but who can resist a lovely pottery one?

They do sell a little rectangle piece to put inside your soap dish, then your soap goes on that. You could also try cutting a plastic lid cover until you find one of the other ones.

They sell little soap holders, that can be placed in your soap dish to allow the water to drain into the dish. You can buy them in dollar stores or hardware stores.

The only way to prevent it is to rinse them out once a week and get all of the soap off of them.

After cleaning all traces of scum off, spray with a vegetable oil, like PAM. Rinse and repeat weekly.
