I've always been told that I had to get a good education after high school so I can get a better job. I believe this, but then I look at Bill Gates, Karl Albrecht, Paul Allen, Lawrence Ellison, and Michael Dell to name a few, who are among forbes' top 20 richest people in the world, who dropped out of college, and I wonder, maybe I should do the same thing. These guys make me believe that I can be successful without college education. Maybe they were the lucky ones, but it still makes me wonder and question whether I should quit school now and just focus on a business of my own. I complete my BA in May '07 and I am applying for grad school for Fall. If I had a choice I wouldn't go, but I know if I do I'll get a better job. I'm just doing this out of obligation and out of the fact that I know in order to survive in today's employment world you have to have the education. I want answers from both sides: why is education important and why education is not important. Thank you.

A college educattion is a great thing. Though its not right for everyone.
You can be very successful without college, but generally it is recommended that you have a degree. And it is usually seen that you WILL be given a job if you have a college degree.
I hope you make the right decision...

And by the way, you can always drop out and then go back to college to continue getting your degree... if things don't work out.

You do not "have to have" a college degree to be "successful."

First, you should define for yourself what success is -- money? A job/career you enjoy and find rewarding? A good marriage? Healthy, happy children? A nice home?

While some very exceptional, bright, motivated -- (lucky) -- people become very successful (money, etc.) without a college education, many go the more traditional route. Education, hard work, a bit of good luck, etc. Remember that college is about life experiences, as well....it isn't just about learning. You make wonderful friends, have wonderful experiences, learn how to problem-solve, manage your time, become more independent, etc....all in a fairly safe environment.

There are also many who become very successful taking another route...own a local business, work hard, etc. These are the "millionaires next door." Read the book that's been written all about that.

Hopefully this input can help you make a decision about college.
