Most prefer to fit it when you are still bleeding as the cervix is open slightly and also it rules out pregnancy.
However it can fitted at any time as it is also possible to use as an emergency contraception upto five days after unprotected intercourse.

I had mine fitted 2 days into my period, because the cervix is slightly open.Felt like period pain whilst it was being inserted, but it only took the dr about 20/30 secs to fit,no pain afterwards and none 2 years later when it was removed.I think it maybe the dr who is doing its preference.

You can have it put in at any time, but the doctor putting it in will have a preference as to when in your cycle they prefer to put it in.
