Because so many people think that celebrities have a made life simply because of their money and being known. It's a fantasy for so many for everyone to know them and love them, though how can you know or love a stranger that you merely see playing a part? I digress...also you should keep in mind the number of people that don't understand the word love or what it holds. They honestly think that they have some emotion for those people beyond respect or admiration, though likely lust. I won't even get into the ones that think they could just meet a certain celebrity they would be together and fall in love. I call it mass delusions, others call it star struck......

The illusion of fame, fortune, and celebrity holds the appearance of power (and, by that appearance, give power to those "celebrities").
There are a lot of people in the world who want an association with their favorite celebs, hoping (consciously or unconsciously) that association will give them a sense of empowerment as well.
In other words, they have no life in their own eyes and live way too vicariously through their favorite celebs.

By the mere expression of the word "Celebrities" it is understood that they are something very special. The main reasons for the same would be they exhibit any or all of the following traits: extra-ordinary charm, beauty, fashion, actions, caliber, strength, courage, capabilities, etc. which are not seen in the ordinary living persons. Anything extra-ordinary is worth -seeing and all are slaves to this fact.

The Nature of Human within a society that idolizes is to seek and become an idol themselves. Its a quality not that dissimilar to hero/emperor worship of the Roman culture. People are simply just that vain and immursed in a society where vanity is valued.
