Ok, I first started running this past June to lose weight and I have been running 6 days a week since. But this past holiday break, I didn't for two weeks since I was just enjoying the break. And when I went back to running, my knee started hurting everytime I bent it. I was convinvced it was my ratty old shoes so I changed them and got a new pair. They are fine but when I went back to run again two weeks ago, my left knee started hurting again. So I gave it some time to relax and heal..and I started again today...same thing! During when I'm runnning is fine, but it's AFTER I feel the ache/pain around the sides of my knee cap and possibly under..I cant tell. it frustrates me since running is my favorite source of excercise and if I can't do it ..it's going to be hard finding another type of excercise since I'm picky. So I'm asking you guys, is there a type of ointment/medicine I should put over it? Something like Icy Hot or some sort?

I had knee problems when I ran XC. You should consult a doctor about it as they can tell whether the tissue around your knee is inflamed (because you didn't run for a while and began again) or because of chronic knee problems.

If you are younger it is more likely because of overuse but if you are older it may be anything from arthritis to chronic knee problems. The good news is that even if you have a continual problem with your knees, you can be prescribed a cloth brace that will keep the movement of your knee caps to a comfortable level when you run. They sound like they would look dorky, but they don't look odd at all and they do work. You can buy those in any drug store, like Rite Aid or CVS.

If it is just inflamed, (like my knees were) then taking a regular dose of ibuprofen BEFORE running helps to keep any swelling down and if there is pain after running, an additional ibuprofen can also relieve some of the pain. IcyHot also works to relieve some of the tension.

Good luck!

I have the same problem. The first thing is to stop running and try walking. This will give you time to build up your quad muscle. Bicycle is also good. You can do squats and any other type of exercise to buil up your quad muscle. Also, you can try a flexible knee brace. Naproxsyn (aleve) is good for the pain. Also ice and elevate your leg. Once the quad muscle is stronger, try running again. If nothing works, see a docter.

Take a day off then start running again, gently at first. If you are running on roads with a camber, be sure to vary which side of the road you run on. Instead of running all the time, mix running with some other sports, especially aerobic ones such as swimming, cycling or cross-country skiing. These will help your running fitness but reduce injury problems.
