When you go is at least as important as where you stay. To keep rates low, avoid special events, large conventions and weekends.

I go to LV for 2 weeks at a time 2-3 times a year and have for over 20 years. I can't emphasize the "when" you go enough, if you have a choice. If you're forced to go at a certain time, at least plan as far in advance as you can>book the best deal you can find "through the hotel" then keep looking for a better deal all the way up until you leave.
Use the travel sites above to compare room rates with the hotels web site. Many LV hotels will price match if you find a better rate for their hotel online.

Check the hotel sites for any "special" rates, they will often have a rate calendar. For special "promotional" rates, sign up for the hotels e-mail updates. Rooms the hotel has not sold ahead of time or given away in marketing offers to players and rooms they are not holding in reserve , will often be offered at low rates.

If you are just going to be using the hotel room to keep your stuff, shower, and maybe sleep in, then you should look into the Motel 6.
My son and I ended a five week driving tour of the US in Las Vegas. We arrived unannounced and got a room with no problem whatsoever. the fact that there was a motorcycle convention, Guns and Roses, and a couple other conventions didnt seem to matter...we were still taken care of.
i think it cost me 47 bucks a night, the room was clean and served the purpose just fine.
and it's within walking distance of Hooters Casino, and further up the road is The Tropicana, MGM Grand and New York New York.
also check out Vegas.com for coupons or any of the other cheap hotel reservation web sites (Orbitz.com Travelocity.com Expedia.com for example)

If you are college age, there are several Hostels in las Vegas, one is just north of the stratosphere.
On the strip is a travel Lodge. Plus you have Motel 6.
But if budget means some luxuries, than Bally's offers great rates when there is no convention in town. Tropicana is always a good deal.

Tropicana and Excalibur usually have pretty cheap rates and are closer to the "action" then the Statosphere.
Monday through Thursday are the cheapest, so shoot for those days.
Check out Cheapovegas.com if you are on a budget.

Generally, the Imperial Palace is probably the best bang for your buck. It's conveniently located, compared to other cheap places on the strip.
If you really want to get down to the lowest price possible, check out the Sin City Hostel:

If you want to be on the strip (and silly not to be) I would recommend the Imperial Palace
