For example, if you apply to 10 schools in your specified field, generally, how many would accept you, and would you qualify for a GRA or GTA position the first year???

It depends on the school you apply to as well as the program.

When I applied to PhD programs in Finance, I applied to nine of the top 12 schools. I got into two programs (Berkeley and Duke). Duke had 250 applications and accepted between four and six students. Berkeley had over 350 applications and accepted nine.

On the other hand, if I had applied to economics programs at the same schools, I probably would have gotten into more than half of them. If I had applied to nine unranked finance programs, I probably would have gotten into all of them.

You should apply to one or two schools that are a reach for you and at least five that you feel you have a legitimate shot at. At the top schools, nearly all PhD students get aid. At public universities, most get aid, because they need the TAs.

Good luck.
