I always thought it was one of those games like kingdom hearts where you do something special and it plays a little video clip...but now i'm just confused. so is it a movie or a game?

The way you described it is pretty acurate, but in the video games, you basically play through a story as the main character. Important scenes are normally in video clips. (That is, on the more recent Final Fantasy games... the earlier games were played on systems not powerful enough for clips.)
Certain games have had their storyline made into a movie, like Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children. (This is basically a continuation of the game's storyline in movie format, no actual playing involved.)

Well, it's both there are many FF games and it's closer to 30 than 20 cause a few years ago I counted them and it was over 20. There are three FF movies: Final Fantasy: The Spirts Within, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and Final Fantasy VII: Last Order. But, Last Order has not been released in the U.S.

Games with Good solid storyline should be made into movies. Because Both are entertainments and compliments the interest generated for the product(esp FF7 I'm still playing it occasionally). plus the movie can add more story to the game that the designer originally planned to be in the game but left out due to technical constraints. I think Metal Gear Solid series on PlayStation (except son of liberty) should be made into a movie but no real bullets Tranq only.

There are many different Final fantasy games spanning many different consoles, close to 20 or so.
There are at least 2 Final Fantasy movies in the US.

orginally final fantasy was a game. the movie is based on the game which is odd as its usually the other way round.

I think it is a game, but all i know is that Square Enix is making a ton load of cash. Mabye i should go work there.

Also, in addition to the ppl above me there are two anime series. One is only two tapes/dvds long and the other is more of a series.
