Back pain had many many cause, usually it is located between the L4 L5 vertebra, but it really depends on age, what you were doing and if you have a history of osteoarthritis or calcium deficiency in your family. If you doctor is not giving you answers you need to see a specialist. I don't recommend a chiropractor if the cause is NOT muscular.

What part of your spine is the problem in (cervical/neck, thoracic/upper back, lumbar/lower back)? You really should have asked your doctor for this (they're great at not telling you stuff when you don't ask). The specialist is probably an orthopaedist who specializes in spinal problems.

My experience with chiropractic therapy is that it provides temporary pain relief, but does not solve the problem. However, I'm a different person and probably have a completely different injury than you have. Give it a shot. In fact, give everything that isn't surgery a shot.

I've never had a back/spinal X-ray. I've had an MRI of my lumbar spine, but never an X-ray.

If you are lucky the specialist is a real doctor, perhaps an orthopedic specialist
