They are definitely more expensive than paperback books because, One, they are concerned with the designing, printing, binding, etc. processes in which they take more time, expertise and investment for each title; thus, the publishing company and its related companies need to plan and executed precisely. Two, they are more durable and can be collected for 100 years+ as evidenced from some of my own even though they did not have high technology then. Contrarily, those paperback ones are for reading and giving them away to the school libraries or being sold cheaply for those readers who don't mind their durability but they simply need to read them. Moreover, they tend to be yellowish over time, say, after 40+ years, the paper would be crispy or easily torn. One problem you'd encounter is that some sheets might not be held fast at the spine like new copies due to the glue quality.

They weigh more. And I seem to think that hardcovers come out before the paperbacks so some are more expensive because they are first editions.

It costs them more to make it (a better material) and it lasts longer, so, it's a better investment in the long run. Also, to be truthful, they want more money too (all companies do.)

if you stuff it into your backpack it won't get damaged. also it's a good life-saving device. if someone attacks you , you can just smack them on the head and they go out cold. it works just fine :)
