The first whole episode was not the first time they were on TV, though. Like the above person said, they started on the Tracy Ullman show with little sketches before and after commercials.

took my DVD collection of the Simpson's out to check, i am a huge fan of the Simpson's
first episode was on December 17, 1989 and it was titled "Simpson's roasting on a open fire"

Yeah their first appearance were as short clips on the Tracy Ullman show. Wow, if you remember the way they were drawn then compared to now it's crazy.

if you mean episode as in not a clip, as in not on the tracey ulman show, then it was in 1989 when the simpsons did their own half hour show.
