It can be because your voltage spikes and can fry electronics and the newer the car it seems, has more electronics. Anything can happen. However on thing to keep in mind is the older cars that still have electronics can be damaged.
The only vechiles that really can't be damaged are cars and trucks with Mechanically controlled diesel engines, with no electronics, with the electronic-less drive trans.

You can if you do it correctly. However, if you connect the cables wrong you can short the electronics in a newer car.

if the jump starts cables cause spikes and sparks they can upset engine management computers etc... if you jump start a car using the official method and not mess around making sparks you'll be ok, but if you're like that crazy Doc in Back-To-The Future and make so many sparks...... remember what happened to him when he hit 88mph? :)

It can cause a surge and damage the computer.
The safest way is to have the jump cable that plugs into the cig. lighter.
