I do not see it ever flash on the black screen with all the computer information.. it goes right to the black screen saying that. The computer monitor flickers badly also-even while in the bios settings. I swapped monitors-same problem so I know its not the monitor. I swapped the power source with a new one-and it still does it. When I try to start the computer using a windows xp pro cd-even though i have home(no cd) and when it gets to the repair.. i see a dos like screen flash a bunch of things.. till it gets to the c/ prompt and stops. I try running fixboot and it comes back to the c: prompt. When trying to run system restore it says no hard drive found.
This computer is only 13 months old -yet one month past warranty so it's not covered. Everything I have read is pointing to a bad hard drive but its hard to believe it would already go bad. Also,I don't understand the flickering monitor. Have tried even plugged the computer using new cords to new outlets.Any suggestion

Hi there.

Man, so many problems. Here are a few things why you are experiencing these problems and what you can try:

1) The flashing of your monitor can be a few things. Since you eliminated the monitor from being defected, it's not the monitor. So now, it's either the video card (built-in or plugin card) that's defective or the fan's not running right (overheating problems), or the motherboard itself is defective from other reasons.

2) It can be a very rare situation that the hdd could be finished, but then, it could not be. And it could be the motherboard again.

3) What you can do is unplug every cord, power cord included, open up your computer (remove the screws from the back), and check if there's lots of dust. Sometimes dust can cause problems such as overheating. Becare not to accidently dislodge stuff while cleaning inside your computer. Get a piece of paper, and write down which cables goes to, from motherboard to your hdd(s), cdroms etc (a diagram is very helpful) and every pin settings. Also write down the manufacture's name of your hard drive, motherboard (and serial number) as well. Disconnect and reconnect each cable, one cable at a time, making sure the cables are snugly pushed in (not forced in).

Leaving the side covers off, reconnect all your power cords and cables, insert a boot disk into your A: drive, and turn on the computer. Run the program:

fdisk

And see if you get errors (no hard disk found etc). Fdisk utility will let you know if your hdd is bad or not.

If all fails, contact the motherboard's or hard disk drive manufacturer for more info on service repairs. And since your warrenty expired, you'll prob have to pay fees.

Hope this helps

The boot tracks on the hard drive cannot be read probably because the hard drive is worn out and the heads aren't being positioned over the tracks properly. Sometimes you get lucky and can read the boot tracks. Put in a new hard drive and install a new operating system. In today's computer world, you'll need a CD drive to install the system. The computer will look for an operating system, and if it can't find one on a CD ROM, Floppy Disk or Hard Disk or the LAN, you'll get the error message.
