when im searching for a file in the search mode?

in search mode when im after a certain file i come across files of things which was downloaded ages ago and erased but why are they still there.is there anyway of getting rid of them in one go it would take forever going through the lot and doing it one by one.

That is probably your temporary internet files, any file that you download and every web site you visit ends up there. Perform a disk cleanup and remove your temporary internet files.
