Men: Edberg and Sampras. Edberg because of his amazing footwork, and Sampras because of his amazing serve
Women: Narvatilova because she had great volleys, and good footwork.

Edberg is good at the net but his serve is okay. McEnroe, he is a natural gift and how can i argue about it. I would say Pete Sampras is the best serve and volley player i ever see. No wonder he has the weapon for his serve and come to the net. I don't know about navartilova but i know she is good at volley and her serve is awesome.

Jonny Mac probably did the best with the least amount of physical prowess. He certainly had some kinda talent though.
Steffan was a great server and volley player, but he didn't win nearly as many events as McEnroe.
Martina was definitely the best S&V player among the women.
It's really subjective as to which of the two were the best. They both won a crazy number of tournaments and also had many wins playing doubles.
Pete Sampras might be talked about in this conversation too, although he didn't always S&V.

Sampras.
Other great tennis players who come to mind when you mention serve-and-volley are Jack Kramer, Pancho Gonzales, Frank Sedgman, Rod Laver, John McEnroe, Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg, and Patrick Rafter.

Johnny Mac was no doubt the greatest serve and volley player of all time. He served and volleyed on all surfaces and was deadly with his left handed serve in the add court.
Please do not confuse Sampras with a pure serve and volleyer-he was all court player at best!

The three you mentioned are pure S&V players. They are really top notch. Can't really say who's the best.
Sampras should be one of the best S&V players as well. He didn't always S&V early in his career, but switched to a pure S&V style later in his tennis career.
Most players stay back these days. S&V players are very rare. The other two good S&V players I can think of are Becker and Rafter ;)
