Women would be stoned to death in public if their husbands thought they cheated or if they showed their face or if they enjoyed sex.

It was not a nice place by far. Saddam was a dictator who did whatever it took to stay in power. But, to be fair, not everything was bad. Woman had a lot of freedom and had rights (didn't have to cover their heads, go get a university education), there was a relative peace between religous groups (there were tensions and hate but no all out war/fighting) and the health care system use to be a lot better.

it was a dictatorship run by a dictator and his close family associates. one called chemical Ali because he became famous killing some 15,000 and more of his people with chemicals....etc. sad situation then -- and sad situation now. living now is close to hell (please note i have not been there) with everyday necessities lacking and getting them you never know if you will return dead or alive or end up in the hospital. truly and unfortunately very bad. sometimes they say countries deserve their chosen leaders -- i do not think and wish to any country those leadership. hope it gets better from now on -- how worse a human situation can get, it beats me.

it was pretty much the same as now, but instead of fearing for their lives bc of suicide bombers and ifiltrators, they feared being snatched by the henchmen of saddam and being sadistically killed in dungeons never to be heard of again
