The one thing that i have noticed more and more in recent years is the growing 'Nanny' culture the government is inflicting on the British public. But is it our own fault for being a nation of 'over-the-hill' wingers, or do you think that we need new laws and regulations to save us from ourselves? I have to say, it makes me ashamed to be British and can't help but wonder whether if voting was made compulsary for over 16's then there would be a much broader opinion and we would not feel the need or have the right to winge as much!

We have gone past the 'Nanny State' phase, and we are now in the full-blooded Big Brother State. This government has a very low opinion of the general public and treats us as if we are incapable of thinking sensibly for ourselves! Cameras watch our every move, we are forced to do what the people in power think we should do, told what is bad for our health, told what is morally wrong. Told what we can throw away and what we must re-cycle, and we are screwed for money in every possible way.
And being British, we sit back and do NOTHING. Oh, sure, we have a bit of a whinge, but that's it. You know, I rather think we actually like living like this, with someone to tell us what to do and when to do it. How else can you explain our putting up with the way we are being treated!

You'll get a lot of answers that say "Blair".

Blair is just the leader of the government and only has one vote.

The real problem was that the Labour party was being whipped by the leadership to tow the line on a more authoritian agenda on law and order. The Conservative party agreed with this authoritarian policy. This translated into enormous majorities for these policies and until recently with the ID card bill there were few or no rebels and no effective opposition.

So the answer simply is, the whole government is at fault, and ultimately ourselves for voting for them. If these policies were so unpopular the govenments wouldn't last too long.

Edit: Bill W: Liberals tend to have less authoritarian laws, not more as you suppose.

So you propose a "new law and regulation to save us from ourselves" in order to prevent new laws and regulations...how ironic.

It is becoming the same way over here in the US. Here it is the people's fault. We are increasingly handing over our responsibilities to the government. We vote for "who can do more for me" over "who can do the best job" (most people don't even notice a difference there). We feel as though being free means free from responsibility - although it is quite the contrary.

it's as much our fault as it is the government. i mean when you look at a hairdryer and it has a sticker on it saying " do not use in the shower" you have to wonder who it's aimed at. but then not everyone is that stupid, the companies and everyone else has to guard themselves against "where theres blame theres claim" culture, something is someone elses fault, this is compounded by over zealous councillors and government ministers under the catch all banner of health and safety, hence cancellation of fireworks displays or banning snowball fights etc. it's a poor do when common sense and good manners has to be legislated, but thats the country we have chosen to be.

I'm in America and fear it's becoming the same thing...I blame it half on the liberals who tug on people's heart strings and half on the people who vote for them for not thinking things through.

I for one don't feel I need to government to save me from anything except physical harm from other people (hence, the military and policemen). I don't need the government to set controls so that I never ingest another gram of transfat or breathe another breath of cigarette smoke. I can make those decisions on my own, thank you very much....*end rant*

Liberals are - they are the ones who love Big Government that will do everything for you - even if you don't want to work - at the expense of those who do want to work.

Blair/New Labour are to blame. They hate the very idea of anyone thinking for themselves.
