Turn my laptop on and it comes up "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt : \windows\system32\system"
I do not have the original set up CD Rom any ideas what i can do?

try to run a restore with the windows xp program disk. This works about 1 out of 4 times at least, so there is still hope!

Try pressing F10 key as soon as you turn it on (several tmes) and see if a System Retore Screen appears. If it does, try to do a "Repair" to the system FIRST, if that option is given to you, if not, and you are warned that the system restore will wipe out all your Settings, Programs, and Data, then you'd better think about it and decide if that's what you really want to do. If not, then take it to a local computer store and see if they can help repair it by booting up to a windows CD and making repairs from there, that will NOT destroy what's on the hard drive. Might cost a bit, but worth it if your data is valuable to you.

if there is nothing on the hard drive you need to save, i would format and reinstall.
try booting in safe mode, in my experience system restore is pants,
if you have original windows disk a fresh install WITHOUT a format may put it right and should keep all settings you have now.
make sure you have good anti virus software

restart your computer keep taping F8 then go in safemode and do system restore point .. click on start .. all programs .. accessories ..system tools system restore . go back 2 days on that then restart the computer when the system restore point is done
