- Did you install the cartridges yourself?
Did you remove the plastic protective tapes?
Did the cartridges "snap" when you pressed them in?
If the printer was sitting around for a while, the nozzles might have gotten clogged. Open a Word document, click File, cl Print. When the Print dialog box opens, click Properties. See if there is a tab for Maintenance. Run a nozzle check and clean the print heads.
Now try it.
If this doesn't work, check the device driver. You did install the driver before you plugged the printer in to the computer, didn't you? If not, you will have to uninstall, Restart, then reinstall correctly.
To check the driver:
To open Device Manager, click Start,
point to Settings,
and then click Control Panel.
Double-click System.
On the Hardware tab,
click Device Manager.
Right-cl the item to be checked and select Properties.
You should be told whether or not the item is working properly. You can also update the driver from here.
If all these fail, contact Dell immediately. I had a problem with one and they sent a new printer. Let me know how you make out.

on the bottom of the cartridge, there is a piece of tape, remove it. also, make sure that you have installed it in the correct spot and snaped into place firmly., IE. make sure the color is in the color slot and the same for the black.
