Yes you can use a stitch holder, much easier. Thread is just a convenience.

You could use a stitch holder but it might get in the way where a thread won't. The first time I try a project, I try to stay true to the instructions and then modify it later if necessary. If you need to slip stitched more than once, you might be better off using a thread as you can't move a stitch holder.
Whichever you use make sure it is all secured. If it isn't, it's a real pain to re-stitch around the rest of the project.

Usually when a pattern tells you to put your stitches on a thread, the intent is for you to use a smooth yarn or string (cotton works best, btw) that is the same size diameter or grist as the yarn you have been knitting with or larger. If you use something smaller you will have a tough time picking those stitches up again. A stitch holder works very nicely, but making a row of single crochet across the stitches to be held works quite well for me. It allows you to pick up one stitch at a time, by pulling out one stitch of the crochet at at time, and the crochet actually holds the stitches open at the right size to put back on the needle. I use a crochet hook with a mm size the same as the mm size of my needle and cotton yarn for this.

i use some leftover yarn but stitch holders work too or you can use a knitting needle that you aren't useing. another possiblity is to use the thread then put it on a holder to knit it off

hope this helps

You can buy a stitch holder where you buy needles. It is like a large safety pin. I use a diaper pin to hold the stitches and then slide them onto a needle. Good luck.

You can use a pin. A thread is smaller and gets in the way less is all.
