I've been looking for some good avant-garde bands/artists along the lines of Mr Bungle, Fantomas, John Zorn(and his many side projects), Ornette Coleman etc

Frank Zappa
Captain Beefheart
Thinking Plague *Best Album: In Extremis - an avant-garde masterpiece in my opinion :)
myspace.com/thinkingplaguemusic (there's a c on the end of musi, but for some reason it shows up as ...)
Absolute Zero - Try Crashing Icons
Miriodor - Try Mekano or Elastic Juggling http://cuneiformrecords.com/bandshtml/miriodor.html
Samla Mammas Manna (Swedish insanity!) Try Maltid or Klossa Knapitatet (progarchives has a few songs to listen to)
Ahvak - http://cuneiformrecords.com/bandshtml/ahvak.html
Univers Zero (created a type of chamber rock) - Try Heresie or Uzed
5uu's http://cuneiformrecords.com/bandshtml/fiveuu.html
Yugen
Hampster Theatre
Henry Cow
Far Corner
Mats/Morgan
Nebelnest
French TV

The Cuneiform label has some of my favorites. www.cuneiformrecords.com has a fair amount of audio to listen to, as well as a bit on www.progarchives.com...

Hey, a favor to ask, I'm starting to get into John Zorn, but he has such an extensive catalogue (like Zappa heh) that I don't know where to start. I like pretty much all the sides to him I've heard, and I'm very open-minded. My e-mail is zappabozzio@hotmail.com if you'd like to recommend some of your favorites sometime, thanks :)

Recommend New York City based guitar player Gary Lucas. He was a Captain Beefheart sideaman but his own music is great. His band is called Gods & Monsters.

Any incarnation of Foetus would be a good start, as well as Frank Zappa.

Try Ex their album "Scrabbling at the Lock" or others from that period are great. Their earlier were more punkish but still very good.
