Recommend New York City based guitar player Gary Lucas. He was a Captain Beefheart sideaman but his own music is great. His band is called Gods & Monsters.

Try Ex their album "Scrabbling at the Lock" or others from that period are great. Their earlier were more punkish but still very good.

i like any buckethead stuff, lye by mistake is pretty strange. but my fave right now would be sleepytime gorilla museum. also check out the o.i.e. label
