Astigmatism is usually caused by an irregularly shaped cornea. But sometimes it is the result of an irregularly shaped lens, which is located behind the cornea.

Astigmatism is an affliction of the eye, where vision is blurred by an irregularly shaped cornea. The cornea, instead of being shaped like a sphere, is more oval-like and reduces the cornea's ability to focus light. Astigmatism is a refractive error of the eye in which there is a difference in degree of refraction in different meridians. So, rather than the surface topology of the eye being spherical, it has two curves, one steeper than the other, in a similar way to the shape of an oval. The condition is typically characterized by an aspherical, non-figure of revolution cornea in which the corneal profile slope and refractive power in one meridian is greater than that of the perpendicular axis. Astigmatism causes difficulties in seeing fine detail, and can often be corrected by glasses with a cylindrical lens (i.e. a lens that has different radii of curvature in different planes), contact lenses, or refractive surgery.

Astigmatism occurs when either the cornea or the lens of the eye is not a figure of revolution or, in other words, is not perfectly smooth or round. As a result, the eye has different focal points in different planes. For example, the image may be clearly focused on the retina in the horizontal (sagittal) plane, but not in front of the retina in the vertical (tangential) plane.

well to be honest, i only know it as a distortion of the image on the retina that may caused by irregularities in the cornea or lens. It also means that the cornea is not spherical, or round, but rather has a different curvature at different points on the cornea. Think of an eye being shaped like a football, with the greatest, or steepest, amount of corneal curvature across the laces and the lesser, or flatter, corneal curvature across the end-to-end portion of the football. A normal eye is shaped like a basketball.

hope this helps.

An astigmastism is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea (called corneal astigmatism). It also sometimes comes as a result of an irregularly shaped lens, which is located behind the cornea; this is called lenticular astigmatism. Either kind of astigmatism can usually be corrected with eyeglasses, contact lenses or refractive surgery.

the eye is shaped like a oval(Football)
rather than round. It makes your vision blurry depending on the severity of the odd shape.
