Because, In mathematics, the reciprocal (also sometimes called the multiplicative inverse) is defined as one of a pair of numbers whose product equals one. So if you have '7' and you need the reciprocal, you have to find the number that when '7' is multiplied by it, it equals one. (ie 7 x 1/7 = 7/7 = 1....or x - 2 multiplied by 1 / x - 2 is equal to x - 2/x - 2 which is equal to one.

reciprocal of (x+1) would be 1/(x+1)

if x was 3

the the reciprocal of 3+1 would be 1/ (3+1)
like saying the reciprocal of 4 would be 1/4 which is true.

if the reciprocal of 3+1 was 1/(3-1)
that would be saying reciprocal of 4 = 1/2 which is false.

if you ever doubt yourself, best thing to do is substitute a number and double check.

the reciprocal of (x +1 ) is 1 / (x+1), i think you mean negative reciprocal.

the reciprocal is, as you surmise, inverting the fraction. In this case, (x+1) is over 1 and thus not relevant and thus not shown. So, the reciprocal is 1/(x+1).

Hope it helps.
