You need to get a new doctor. You do not need to get an exam just because you start your period. These people are out of their mind. If you have no problems you should get an exam when you start having sex or turn 21. Please get a new doctor. Read the link.

O my... I have a daughter that is also 9 years old...she hasn't started her period yet, and just having to go through that scares me...So I can understand why you would be a little nervous about a pap. I have always been told that a girl doesn't have to go in for a pap until they are 16 or sexually active which ever comes first. Now, I seriously doubt your daughter is sexually active, why not call a different gyno and ask them what age your daughter should have her first visit in there. You on the other hand should be getting these exams every year ... pap test are the key to catching cervical cancer in the early stages.....also want to mention you might want to ask your doctor if your daughter should get the new vaccine that helps protect against cervical cancer the vaccine is good for ages 9-26 years old.
Good Luck.

Didn't the doctor give you a reason why he/she thinks your daughter should have one? If not, call his/her office and have someone give you an explanation. I'm sure the doctor just want to make sure everything is okay. If you and the doctor decide it is not really necessary for her to have one at this point, she can put it off for a few more or many more years.
Normally, one should start going for yearly exams at the age of 21 or when she becomes sexually active. This means you should be having them yearly as well, like others have said. Even if you aren't at risk of coming into a contact with an STI you should monitor your health. This is how cancer and other things you'd want to know about get spotted--breast cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, endometriosis, PCOS and much more. Please take care of yourself.
Perhaps you could make an appointment to get a pap smear yourself, and you're daughter can sit in the waiting room. Then after your appointment you can tell her there is nothing to worry about so that she will be less nervous during hers. Perhaps, you may even request back-to-back appointments.

You need to get a pap test and if that doctor is your doctor as well and hasn't made you get one yet there is something off there. She should get an exam it is normal to do so but not usually as often as every year. I would reccomend you get a new gyno, ask a trustred friend or sister or mom or whoever who they go to in your area and see if they are taking new patients. And just tell your daughter this is part of being a woman and it is only to ensure her health and well being. And most women who are responsible for their health do go to the gynecologist because it is part of staying healthy so most older women have done that. I personally know two women who had cervical cancer at the age of 19. The sooner you get your daughter to practice good health in all areas possible the better chance she has of leading a healthy life.

Well, if you have a nine year old, *you* should have a pap smear. In fact you should have one every year... it's quick and painless, and will REALLY reduce your risk of dying of cervical cancer, which is highly treatable when caught early but a beast if left until too late.
The fact that she started menstruating at such a young age may have worried him... some early puberties can be caused by hormonal problems that might not have been detected in ordinary checkups. I don't know that *annual* Paps are necessary for a non sexually active girl of that age.
I'd take her in to her pediatrician and see what he has to say about it. He may have a different opinion, or he may agree with your gynecologist. But he's probably the best place to begin.

This scares me, I have a 4 year old daughter and would not let her get a pap until she tells me somethings wrong. We go to military doctors and my daughter was born with allot of estrogen in her body. They wanted to do a pap on her a 6 months. I told them where they can go. I talked to a civilian doctor and he said just a sonogram is fine. If you feel uncomfortable with the doctor's suggestions then take her to another one.

First, you should have had a pap smear if you are old enough to have a nine year old kid. Anyone who is either sexually active should have a pap smear every year. A pap smear is a good way to prevent disease and ensure you are completely healthy "down there".
Second, it is because she has had her period. She is now able to get adult diseases.
Personally I have not had one, I am 17. But, I am not sexually active. So, no need.

Wow, 9 is early for having a period, but once you start that's when you have to start getting exams. I'm sure you can wait til she's like 14 though.

she should only go if she's sexually active or over 21 whichever is earlier.
9 year old is kind of early for having period, get her to exercise and cut down on fried food.
