Ooops, everyone seems to have overlooked "rather." It, in addition to "harshly," is an adverb. It modifies "harshly" and tells "how harshly."

The only adverb in the sentence is 'harshly.' An adverb can modify a verb, an adjective, another adverb, a phrase, or a clause. An adverb indicates manner, time, place, cause, or degree and answers questions such as "how," "when," "where," "how much". In this case, 'harshly' is indicating "how" you scolded him.

It's a trick question. Yes, adverbs typically end in LY. And yes, "harshly" is an adverb in the sentence. BUT, so is "rather". Adverbs can modify other adverbs. From the infamous "Lolly Lolly Lolly" Schoolhouse Rock episode:

"Let's say you're going to paint a house. How are you going to paint it? Very neatly? Or rather sloppily?"

"harshly" is the adverb associated with the verb "scolded". Verbs are action words and adverbs provide more information about the verbs.
