AIDS = Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

A very unpleasant disease that destroys your immune system and leaves your body unable to fight off even a weak cold. There is no cure and it kills thousands of people around the world each year. There are treatments that can help AIDS victims live a normal life for a long time. The virus is passed through body fluids and usually occurs during unprotected sex or drug use (sharing needles).

If you really don't know anything about AIDS, it's important that you learn as much as you can right away, and educate others, so that you don't catch or spread the virus unknowingly.

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, in short is known as AIDS.

What is AIDS?

AIDS is a disease of the immune system characterized by increased susceptibility to opportunistic infections, as pneumocystis carinii pneumonia and candidiasis, to certain cancers, as Kaposi's sarcoma, and to neurological disorders: caused by a retrovirus and transmitted chiefly through blood or blood products that enter the body's bloodstream, esp. by sexual contact or contaminated hypodermic needles.

What does AIDS attack at?

It is a variable retrovirus that invades and inactivates helper T cells of the immune system and is a cause of AIDS and AIDS-related complex: variants were identified in several laboratories and independently named lymphadenopathy-associated virus (LAV), human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 3 (HTLV-3), and AIDS-related virus (ARV), the name human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) being subsequently proposed by an international taxonomy committee.

Ways to prevent getting AIDS:
1) Use a condom during sex
2) Do not share used needles or syringes
3) Do not change many sexual partners
