It is not illegal to buy a tortoise. You may need to get a certificate to keep it, depending on what type you get. You would probably get one for around £150. Try pet shops in your area or ring further afield if you need to. They used to be difficult to get but are becoming more available now.

It varies greatly but if you have the option to find a good breeder they will be about half the price of a pet store and they won't be exposed to the chance of illness.
