I am breathing in something harmful. If so, is there some way to combat the mildew. The mildew appears as brown speckles on visible porion of the pages when the book is closed. Will this damage the books? Thanks a lot.

All moulds and mildews are harmful to respiratory systems but it depends on the person; how sensitive you are to it. If you start getting sick for some unknown reason, now you know the reason. The air on the street outside the store is probably more harmful (if it's on a city street with traffic) than the musty smell you have inside.

Not only will mildew damage the books, but it devalues them as well. You can treat the books to get rid of the mildew and kill the spores, however. Put the affected books out in the sunlight with good air circulation all around them. To then get rid of the smell put them in a cardboard box with activated charcoal in a plastic container. Breathing mold and mildew can cause respiratory infections.
