The day before yesterday I started combining my breastmilk with his formula in a bottle. That's how I been feeding him. Now I noticied that he hasn't had a bowel movement for more than 24 hrs. He's passing gas...and they really really stink. And his farts NEVER stink. The poor thing can't really sleep...he wakes up after 20 mins. What should I do? Should I stop the mixing the milk with the formula? What medicine is the best? HELP!!!

when babies are that young they dont always have BMs. they could go a whole week without having one and that is totally normal. signs that he is constipated are painful BMs (it is obvious when they are having one) and hard round ball BMs. so unless he has those symptoms, dont worry about him not having a BM. i would do something about the gas though, that can be very uncomfortable. they sell infant gas drops that will help him, they have them at any drug store or even wal mart.

Well if you're mixing it there has to be a reason behind it. It is safe and possible to continue to do this and your child have regular bowel movements. It may be because of the change. Pediatricians reccommend you give them a call once your baby has gone 3 days without a bowel movement. They will check your baby and tell you if he is or not. Most breastfed babies can go a while without a bowel movement. Up to 17 days, but with formula the numbers are different. I use mylecon for gas. It is the greatest. Also try laying him across your lap and rubbing his back. Don't let him sleep this way alone, but it's okay it helps their little stomachs. Good luck and congrats on your newborn.

Breastfed babies have very mild smelling gas and poops. Formula babies are notoriously stinky when they pass gas and poop. I'm not surprised that your baby has not had a BM. It's OK for up to three days at that age. I'd say it's from introducing the formula. Breastmilk is best for babies. You can continue to mix the breastmilk with the formula if you want or you can switch to mixing it with water, either way, your baby's gas and poops will probably be pretty stinky. Also, you'll want to be sure you burp him really well after he eats. Breastfed babies don't burp as well, but formula babies seem to need it more. Good luck!

I would start nursing exclusively again. Breast milk is easy on their digestive systems and actually soothes it. With my first I mixed formula with the breast milk also...and the very same thing that you are describing there happened to him. The best thing is to stop mixing the milk with formula and that will help him more than anything!

Formula is a form of cows milk and will never take the place of breast milk, I know that it is hard to deal with because sometimes it just isn't possible to nurse. Write to me if you have any questions about how to increase your milk or other ideas that you can do. I have gone through nursing a preemie, biting, weaning, formula allergies, mastitis, surgeries... to put it simply A LOT during nursing!

The same thing happened to my baby. I pumped for the first 2 1/2 mos. He used to have a BM after practically every feeding. I started supplementing w/formula bc I wasn't producing enough and I did notice his BM's getting further apart. I wouldn't worry, but if you are really worried call the dr. That's what they are there for. My baby used to get really gassy and unhappy and we would sometimes give him Mylicon for the gas. It seemed to work really well. Good luck!!

It could just be formula change. My baby did not go to the bathroom normal. She went once evey three days so the doc said prune juice it worked but I knew it wasn't normal. 4 formulas later no more crying and she goes to the bathroom every day. Wonderful for her she feels better. I have her on nutramigen enfamil. So it does have a lot to do w the formula. Good Luck My baby just turner two months.

AS for the gas, give him Mylicon gas drops and for the bowel movements, give him a little KARO syrup in his formula. Works like a charm.

First of all, babies do not need to poop every day, so don't be alarmed. I'd say if your baby goes a week and no poop - then call the doctor.

What you feed him is up to you. Also be sure to talk to the doctor about any concerns.

You probably have nothing to worry about.

If you feel that you should stop giving him formula... that's your choice, but adding dark Karo Syrup to the bottle will help him have a bowel movement.
