I work for a major utility and this is my answer. Never run your furnace without a filter. If you ever saw what gathers on a filter, consider that flowing into the furnace and burning up in the furnace and then circulating into your breathing air. Also, filters installed backwards can cause the filter to come apart and do the same thing. Filters are designed with reinforcement on one side to prevent this. They are cheap so I would suggest replacing it with one you can install correctly. The side of the filter should have an arrow on it showing you the direction of the airflow. This should point to the furnace or firebox depending on where it is installed.

Not in place at all,the filter though installed backwards will still filter the air but will fill it up quicker than the correct way.they are built where they catch bigger particles in the air and on the other side grabs the smaller stuff.i would use a pleated filter instead of a throw away fiberglass spun one.better filtration.

It is structured as to stand the flow of air in the direction it is meant to, 6kids is right--- don't turn it around now and blow the dust thru the unit,
Hey you can buy them at Home Depot for less than a buck, throw it away and follow the "Arrow; put it towards the unit.

Backwards is better than nothing but don't make the mistake of turning it around now that you discovered it's backwards... bad idea. Next time you change it, away you go... leave this one for now.

It is worse to not be in at all. Even though it is in backwards, it is still in. Good luck.

It's a dust collector and with it put in the correct direction it will collect the dust more efficient.
