I went to Cape Town last year and the only thing I regret not buying is tanzanite! It is mined there and will soon be depleted, but the cost is much less there than it is here. There is a waterfront/harbor area where you can shop for jewelry, statues, art prints and clothes (I bought all and am glad I did!) The exchange rate was in my favor being an American, so I was able to get a lot for my money. Make sure what you are buying was made in South Africa. Also, be sure to get things from specific places you may go -Robbin Island, maybe a book (you can get one written by a former inmate and he may sign it as well) -I got a coin from another spot we visited, etc. Do not bring back wine as it will not travel well and you can likely get the same bottles back home. Enjoy your trip! I loved it there!

Cape Velvet- a cream liqueuer, semi-precious stones from Topstones, arts and crafts (wooden carvings, radios made from cans, etc.), anything from the seaside town of Kalk Bay (antiques, crafts, clothes, etc.). Greenmarket square and the Waterfront are good to visit but can be overpriced- check out smaller towns and roadside crafts(loads along peninsula), biltong (dried meat- try before you buy!), a tan from Clifton beach!
Enjoy! Cape Town is beautiful.

An "I love Cape Town" T-shirt, a picture of you with Table Mountain in the background and a bottle of red wine from one of the surrounding wine estates.
Enjoy your stay. I grew up in the area but am now living in Taiwan. Wish I could be there!

Here is my point of view. Crime is so rampant in South Africa that anyone who does not warn a prospective visitor beforehand is amoral. Anyone who aligns with the Tourism Board of South Africa and spreads their lies about "crime is everywhere" and/or "South Africa is safe" etc has the potential for blood on their hands.

If you can get out without becoming a victim of their crime pandemic then buy a t-shirt at the Airport with the words " I survived South Africa 2007."
