i tried typing "admin" as the password just to see if it works but its taking forever searching for the network or whatever. usually if the password is wrong it would tell me so right away. what does this mean?

Which password are you taking about.. the admin password or the wireless signal password... either way if you don't know it you basically have to rest the router and set it up from scratch.

There should be a reset button (or a hole to insert a paperclip) on the back of the router. Press and hold this button until the indicator lights on the front blink. Now the router is set to its out of the box setting.

On the computer already connected to the router. (if by wireless connection you may have to rescan to make the connection) open Internet explorer and type 198.162.0.1 in the address bar. This will open the logon screen. Leave the user id blank and put "admin" in the password field. This will bring you to the adminstrative menu where you can set up the connection with new passwords and new user id. You will also need to set up the wireless signal security (another password) so that the network is secure

Here's a link to the linksys site... find your product and you can download a setup guide for your router.

If you're trying to gain access to your uncle's linksys router the address usually is 192.168.0.1, or 192.168.1.1 from the browser address bar, when the Linksys Login screen appears type in admin for the username and leave the password field blank... sometimes there is NO password....if that doesn't work, try admin for username and admin for password, that can sometimes be the default settings on some routers....if that doesn't work, then try admin for username and "password" for the password (type it without the quote marks).

If none of this works then you'll have to hit the reset button on the router and run it's setup from scratch after you regain access to it usng the suggested username and passwords I've instructed you to use.

In the web browser on your uncles computer, type your uncles IP address, then try to use admin as the username and password. If that does not work, try administrator as the username and admin as the pw. If neither works, then try reseting the router by unplugging it for 5-10 minutes, and re-installing the driver information w/ the CD that comes w/ the router.
