Go to an orthopedic sugeon specializing in hand injuries. Many times multiple doctors will give multiple readings. The only truly trained person to read Xrays is a Radiologist. Get the radiologists report and you should have all the answers you seek. You have the right to review the report. the radiology department should be able to give it to you within 24 hrs of your request

I broke my finger and was told it was "jammed" by my nurse/wife. Went to the doctor a week later and it was definately shattered.... but too late to do anything about it after a week. Now I will never be able to make a fist again! I would definately get Xrays as soon as possible-- doctors should tell by the xray what they need to do next

The ortho is the expert. However, unless you need surgery, it probably doesn't matter if it's broken or not. You are going to have to immobilize it till it heals either way. You can always get a third opinion from a doctor who is not associated with the other two, you know, someone who doesn't have a financial interest in whether your thumb is broken or not.

The treatment may end up being the same for both....ask each of them how they want to treat it. You could also take your xrays to a third doctor, preferably an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hands.

I had a similar situation with a foot injury. Get a third opinion from an orthopedic surgeon that specializes in hand injuries. I didn't get the right answer till I saw someone who specialized in feet.
