human nature
And it's not necessarily a bad thing. Consider:
Selfishness is, at base, the concept and/or practice of concern with one's own interests in some sort of priority to the interests of others.

If you weren't so concerned with what you want, it wouldn't bother you. Think about it.
We can't help but be selfish because we can't share our minds with others. We're the only one's in our heads. We're born alone, and we die alone, and no amount of empathy will change that. Trying to deny selfishness is trying to deny your self. That's a sin in my book.

part of the human brain controls emotions so it really isn't the person it is their brain in the first place, but why people are so selfish is a mystery. People can be flat out mean or maybe there could be problems in their life, no one is perfect.

Christ advocated self love! His commandment to "Love your neighbor as you do yourself." implies that you must love yourself. I have had people say that it is humanly impossible to love another as much as you love yourself. But I think that those people who do not interact with others in a loving way actually hate themselves so that is why they act so meanly toward other people. Those who truly love only themselves and consider self to be the only reality are solipsists. They are rare.
Peace and love.
