I got a dell computer in 2004. I don't have enough space to play online games, etc. It's got some spyware in it too and doesn't always run very well. Should I get a new computer, or just have my current one updated?

your computer is not "broken" nor outdated or obsolete. most stores will say so because they are trying to sell you a new one.

You get a new computer when the cost of making your old one do what you want it to do is close to the cost of getting a new one,

for what you describe I suggest installing a larger hard drive or a second one, and adding more ram.
you should also go to www.antivirus.com and get a free virus and spy-ware scan of your machine. then get AVG installed on your machine. avg is a free anti-virus program available on line.

If you have a little cash / the best overall maintenance program for computers that I have ever seen is Norton systemworks. update your old computer / buy Norton system works and use it regularly.

About every 5 yrs, with a refresh -- new graphics card, larger HD, more RAM etc. -- every 1.5 yrs or so.

Suggest you get some solid anti-V & spyware tools working for you.

Every two years. If you can get it updated try that first. That never seems to be the case for me.
