Eventually your bamboo will start roots and it won't look as nice in just water if it's in a clear vase/bowl. But if you'd want to move it into sand, pebbles or even soil it will grow much faster. Once you get those long shoots grow too long, just cut them off and stick them into the soil - and they start growing again. I did this 3 times alrady as it keeps getting to the ceiling from those 5 inch sticks I initially purchased.
Just keep it in topped off with water and that's about all the maintenance it needs.
I keep mine in the bathroom, maybe that's why it grows so fast.
And there's also a belief that the lucky bamboo reflects the feelings of its owner. It was true in my case - I purchased it when I was down, had lots of problems, so I purchased it for luck. It almost died - had no shoots, and was not looking good.
Then my life improved, I started feeling much better and my bamboo started coming to life.
For the last couple of years it very much grew and I was pregnant and happy and now I'm a happy mommy :)
So good luck to you and wish your bamboo hits the ceiling very fast :))
