Also, is it worth trying to repair? That is, will the crack simply continue to spread even if I seal it? I have heard of the following adhesive compounds: caulking, epoxy-resin. Will either of these do the job? Do I need some other product that I've never heard of? Thanks a lot.

Good Answers, what may appear to you to be plastic could be fiberglass or another compound, you must be reasonably sure, the fiberglass resin could melt the plastic and the plastic compound might not work on fiberglass.

The tub will have to be replaced eventually. What compounds you have mentioned would only be a cosmetic job. But the structural integrity of the tub has been compromised and thats where it would be weakest to any stress. Water is a powerful force. You can purchase a liquid plastic which comes with a hardener from any hobby store again it will work for awhile for how long is another matter.

The Jb Weld should hold but if you are worried that the crack might spread drill a small hole at each end of the crack and it will stop it from spreading more. Clean the surfaces by using alcohol before applying the JB Weld

Go with epoxy resin. Often stronger than the material it repairs.

just... FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!

You can also find fiberglass patches to use with the resin.

Epoxy will work. JBWeld makes a product for plastics. I believe it is called JBQuick. It can be purchased in autoparts stores, as well as other places.
If I were you, I would try this first, and if it didn't last long, then I would purchase another tub.
Good luck on this.
