I just got a bike for my birthday but I dont like the color. I want to paint it a different color but Im not sure what paint would be better and cheaper to use on the frame. any suggestions on the paint and procedure to follow or perhaps a website?

The best way to change the color is to have it powder coated. That is most likely what is on your bike now. If you plan on painting it, I strongly suggest using an automotive grade paint. Spray cans are fine, but do not buy what they offer in the auto parts store. Go to an automotive paint store and get a good paint.

There you can get the color you love mixed right into the spray can.

Instructions. 1. completely disassemble the bike so there are no chrome parts or working parts left on the bike.
2. remove all stickers using a good wash pad (3m) and a product called release agent. (do this right away, the longer you wait the longer you will be fighting the stickers) a heat gun might help as well.
3. get some wet/dry sand paper (400 to 600 grit) wet sand the entire bike.
4. paint the bike using very light coats, allow 15 to 20 minutes for the paint to flash (dry to touch) between coats. be sure to get at least 4 or 5 coats on the bike.
If you over paint and it cracks or drips, you will want to sand off the new paint and start over.
5. If you do not want to repaint and wax your bike, i suggest finishing the job with a clear coat.

HINT- acrylic enamels will be much easier to work with than oil based paints.

I would hate for you to be disappointed in the results of a "cheap" paint. My suggestion would be to go to (in person) a car body shop and talk to them there. Ask them what to do to prep it and then take it to them to paint for you. If you're not in a hurry, you can almost pick out any colour from the ones they are painting the cars with. They'll just hang it there and spray at the same time. Awesome paint, machine dried and hardened and a happy you for your work!

Gibson_Slayer is on point, but I'm not sure you are going to be able to afford quality automotive paint?

I have had good luck with Dupli-Color spray paint available from AutoZone, Advanced Auto & Pep Boys.
