Serve a "purpose"? Your thinking that natural selections works on a group of organisms and that is incorrect; genes code for phenotypes and hence natural selection works on the individual at the genetic level.
An organisms purpose is not to be food for something else and it is NOT for the survival of the species; the genes are the instructions to create the organism and hence the the purpose of an organisms existence is to propagate their genes into the gene pool.
This can be seen by a lion taking over a new pride; he'll kill all the baby cubs. Why would he waste his time raising genetically inferior cubs that are not related?
Hence, if a wasp is propagating it's genes it has a purpose - the only purpose.

Without the wasp we would have a lot more flies as they eat them. Also wasps gave us paper or rather the concept. The ancient Chinese discovered that wasps nests were a pulp that could be easily reproduced from wood mash and could be written on, it was also cheaper and easier to produce than parchment. So maybe they do have a use after all.

From a human view of nature there seems to be no reason for the wasp to exist but there could be good reasons such as the pollination of plants.
A list of creatures etc that appear to have no usefull purpose would be very long ( rats would be included in my list !) and dare I say it some humans.

They pollinate carry pollen on their little legs for reproduction of plants/ flowers . Although they have fewer hairs than bees they still have them . They are essential for pest control as well every pest has a wasp to control it.
p.s Its the earwigs that make chutney

Hi
I have one as a pet. Hes normally around in the summer and always looks me up............
He's a great guy and really no trouble at all.
I have a bit of bother getting his collar on and off when we go for walks. Vet bills are cheap.

The point is at the back end, make one angry if you want to check.............
Sorry couldn't help it. Also, I don't think God had that much to do with extinguishing the Dodo, that one was down to the humans.

I think they do kill other nasty creepy crawlies but thats about all.
But we do need wasps...what other nests can you throw your fireworks into, that give the same entertainment value as a swarm of angry wasps

"Jellyfish: They don't know what they are doing... they just float about stinging stuff. They are 97% water and they are always in water so why not make em another 3% water and just make em into water... drought sorted." - Karl Pilkington
