I hate it when that happens. It happened to me once and it took sooo long to finally get rid of them but now I swear by it. Roach Prufe is the product that finally did it for us. I have not seen it in years so I don't know if it is still on the market, but if you just go to walmart or any place that sells any sort of pesticides look for borax powder. It is a light blue powder and is almost harmless in small amounts to humans and pets, but on roaches it works almost overnight. It is very inexpensive and it works like a charm every time. Just spread it everywhere! Especially on carpet since they lay their eggs in it and no vacuum can pick them up. It is a pain to clean up, but there are no fumes and personally I'd rather clean for two days than to deal with a cockroach for a minute. **** luck!

Use bug bombs in the house. I would use one or two in each room but especially the kitchen and where animals eat. Follow the directions and I suggest this is a good time to empty out the kitchen cupboards and clean (after the bug bombs). You may need to do this several times before getting rid of them. If you have no luck with them then you can call an exterminator- they come in and do a good job.
PS: Follow instructions with your furnace (pay special attention to it so you do it right) as the furnace cannot come on while the stuff is in the air-remote but possible fire hazard.

Look - remove your pets from the house and get someone in who will deal with them once and for all. What did your mum do to get them in the first place?
Once you have gotten rid of them why no have another pet - one that likes to eat roaches...

Call around for some prices for cockroach treatments from licensed companies, they can do the most thorough job at eliminating them.
Bug bombs just drive some of them deeper into hiding and they re-emerge 2-3 months later when you think you had the problem solved.

Get a toad. Put him in the kitchen at night with a night light. He will eat them.
Leave something smelly near the night light to draw them out.
