I can't get my Wireless router to work on my laptop?

I'm living in an apartment complex, but I can't get the internet to work on my laptop in my apartment. I can pick up wireless signals in other peoples apartment, but there is no signal n my apartment. I have a lead that I can connect to my laptop for the internet, but it doesn't seem to work on my laptop, although it does on my room-mate's laptop. So I bought a wireless router to install in my apartment, but you have to connect the lead in order to install the router, hence it won't install as I can't connect to the internet on the lead.

Can anyone tell me why? There is clearly nothing wrong with the internet connection lead as it works on someone else's laptop, but it won't connect on mine.

I'm guessing there must be something to do with whatever options and settings I have set on my laptop, but I don't know what to change or how.

Can anyone help? Greatly appreciated.

I had the same problem with my laptop. I could get signals but my laptop wouldn't connect.. i had to go in and turn off my firewall. Which blocks you from logging onto any internet connection that isn't secure. If you do that then you can have problems but that was the only way I could log onto someone else's internet connection. goodluck
