I am establishing a new freshwater community in a 10 gallon tank. So far i have 2 small fancies and one medium Oranda. They will all live in my 10 gal once it has cycled. I was wondering about adding a very small freshwater crab in about a month. Will my species of fish get along with the crab? And what is the proper feeding strategy when you have fishes and crustaceans living together?

Update:
I checked out petco.com and they have this awesome interactive fish compatibility chart. Based upon your answers and petco's info, i am not putting any crabs or other crustaceans with my goldfish. here is the link to that chart in case you think you need one.

Your 10 gallon will be seriously overcrowded. The absolute minimum tank size that you can have for two small fancies and one medium size fancy is 40 gallons. The fancies need a minimum of 10 gallons each and the medium oranda needs a minimum of 20 gallons, and this size will increase to 20 gallons for each one of them once the littler ones reach about 3-4 inches themselves. So, actually, to save money by not having to buy another tank later, you should just buy a 60 gallon tank now. I'm glad you decided against any crabs and I'm glad you understand the need to cycle your tank. Get some good filtration too! Kokos is down right now, but I am giving you their link because they have excellent articles on goldy care, fitration, cycling, water testing, water changes, diseases, feeding, etc. Good luck and have loads of fun with your goldies!

you should get a book... when i was little i had a fish tank and the small fresh water crabs used to stand on a rock and wait for the neons to swim by and grab them and eat them... they also used to try to climb out of the tank, have no idea how, but they ended up on the living room floor every so often.. there funny little buggers.

The crab will mess up your fish's fins if it's very small and injure them worse if it is larger.
