I am looking into being a general contractor and need learn how to estimate construction costs. What is the best method of learning how to estimate cost in order to give a bid. Is there a computer program that does this for you? Is there a really good book to read? Should I find an old estimator? Please give me any feedback. Thanks

First, you need to learn the trade. You need to know how things are done, what is required by codes, etc.

Contact your local Small Business Administration office, and ask about programs they have to help you start a business, like mentoring, writing a business plan, etc.

QuickBooks is one program that advertises itself as useful for small business, such as contractors, among others. Personally, I developed my own forms using Lotus, and keep track of my financials on Quicken. Then I use TurboTax, which imports all of my Quicken information, into the correct tax categories.

Bottom line though... you NEED to know the work. If you don't know ALL the steps involved in a project, youre going to lose money.

I would seriously recommend that you try working for another contractor for a year or two, to pick up the tradeskills.

Good Luck
